The Lenana Slum Orphans (LSO) is a Kenyan-registered, community-based organization established in June 2004 as a response to the ever-growing orphan population in the Lenana slum on the outskirts of Nairobi and the increasing number of individuals with HIV/AIDS within the settlement, including the children, their guardians and the general population. As of July 2006, 60 orphans and vulnerable children were attending the LSO on a regular basis.
For the children of the slum, the LSO provides:
- Counseling - Home-based care services to children living with guardians - Food and shelter for children with no guardians - Library resources and educational facilities - Pre-school education - Daily food supplements - Training in hand-making crafts, honey and briquettes - Access to AIDS testing and health care,
For other children and adults within the community with HIV/AIDS, the LSO provides:
- Counseling - Home-based care services - Access to health care
The LSO also attempts to increase the level of conservation and environmental awareness, while also emphasizing traditional practices and values. For example, the LSO educates on alternative uses of natural resources and the basics of conservation.
